Between Salvation and Constitution

On Saturday, 15.12.2018 the exhibition is closed. We invite you to SZRON The December Art Fair

This year, at the beginning of August, we learned that after seven years in the Saska Kępa district of Warsaw, the gallery would be moving to the very center of town. Now located in the MDM complex built during Poland’s post-war reconstruction era in the 1950s, the gallery is set between two major city squares – Plac Zbawiciela (Saviour Square) and Plac Konstytucji (Constitution Square). Two weeks after we’d moved in, on the 15th of August, on the day commemorating both Holy Mary as the Queen of Poland and the anniversary of the Miracle on the Vistula battle, archbishop Wacław Depo gave a sermon on Jasna Góra and in it he declared that “rather painful statements have returned in recent times about Poland being ruled by the constitution, not the gospel, that the constitution must go before the gospel.” In the wake of the increasingly heated conflict about the rule of law, which the church enters into by way of such remarks, we decided to invite a group of artists to make their voice heard in response to these remarks on the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Polish independence.

Instead of a curatorial text, we’re providing links to news articles that have commented the words of this high-ranking clergyman of the Polish Church and the independent commentary from the artists behind the works on show:

(texts available only in the original Polish. Please contact the gallery if you would like more information on the project)
